Gold and silver reach historic highs amid global uncertainty
This week, the price of gold hit a new record, exceeding 5,100 dollars an ounce, continuing a spectacular rise that began several months ago. In a climate marked by significant geopolitical and economic tensions, investors are turning en masse to this metal, which is considered a safe haven.
According to several analysts, this upward trend could continue throughout the year. Some even anticipate that the price of gold could reach 6,400 dollars an ounce, with an annual average estimated at around 5,375 dollars.
International uncertainties are playing a major role in this dynamic. Strained relations between the United States and NATO over the issue of Greenland, as well as the lack of progress in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, are fueling fears of lasting instability. Recent strikes in Ukraine, which have left more than a million people without electricity in the middle of winter, are further intensifying this anxious climate.
Added to this are new trade threats. The US President recently mentioned the imposition of high tariffs on Canada in the event of a trade deal with China, further fueling concerns about global economic stability.
Since the start of 2025, gold has thus posted a 64% increase, supported by the easing of US monetary policy, massive purchases by central banks — notably in China — and record inflows into gold-backed investment funds.
Silver is also experiencing a remarkable surge. Its price recently crossed the 100 dollars an ounce mark for the first time, driven by a 147% rise over the past year. Retail investor demand, combined with persistent tensions in physical markets, is increasing pressure on this metal, which is both precious and industrial.
At the same time, other precious metals are performing more variably: platinum shows a slight decline, while palladium continues a moderate rise.
